One of the most essential parts of the mom adventure is making mom friends wherever you go...church moms, park moms, mops moms, neighborhood moms, and preschool moms. These mom friends are invaluable in sharing your joys and pains, imparting parenting tips, and… taking care of your kids. They are a gift from God to you during your mothering years. You also are a blessing to them!
My preschool mom friend and I came up with the great idea that we would take turns taking care of each other’s kids once a week after school. Today (Tuesday) was the first day enacting our plan, and it was my turn to take Mira home with us. While Joel was at school, I opened all the windows, vacuumed, dusted, and arranged the toys in attractive configurations. I planned our lunch, preheated the oven, and prepared the craft. At 11:15, I headed out on my bike to pick up the kids.
As I pedaled, I listened to the kids talk excitedly in the bike trailer. We got to our front door and they waited impatiently while I looked for my keys and… looked for my keys… and looked for my keys… No keys. No cell phone. No keys….
Suddenly I remembered the windows! Standing on an upended garbage can, I hoisted myself up to Joel's bedroom window where I remembered the fly screen was loose. I jacked it out, pulled myself through the window, and let the kids in.
They barged past me to dress up as superheroes (MOMMY! WHERE did you PUT MY SUPERHERO STUFF?). They nibbled on their lunch, loved the craft, and fought over the beanbag chairs. As their screams reached my ears, I thought to myself "Is this such a good idea? " When my friend came to pick her up her daughter looking refreshed and happy I knew it was indeed worth it! Besides, next time Joel will be at Mira’s house. I hope that her mom keeps a key in her garage or a window open.
As you go along your mom-adventure, think about moms you can bring with you as co travelers. Keep the door open for new friendships for both you and your kids.
